Why crypto transactions is illegal in Nepal?

by manjul kc

Cryptocurrency, a digital form of currency, has sparked global interest in recent years. However, Nepal, a nation nestled in the Himalayas, has taken a firm stance against it. The government’s decision to ban cryptocurrency has stirred significant debate within and beyond its borders.

Transitioning into the core reasons behind this ban, one finds that regulatory concerns top the list. Nepalese authorities fear the potential misuse of cryptocurrencies for illegal activities such as money laundering and terrorist financing. Moreover, the fear of losing citizen’s money in the global market might be another reason. Such concerns have prompted them to enforce stringent measures.

Additionally, the lack of proper regulatory frameworks exacerbates the situation. Nepal’s financial system operates within a traditional framework, ill-equipped to handle the complexities of digital currencies. This inadequacy leaves room for exploitation and poses risks to the country’s financial stability.

Another thing is that while talking about cryptocurrency we only think about Bitcoin. We are hearing about the present scenario of Bitcoin on the market about how it is gaining value. But, we are unaware that it is not only the crypto currency in this world. There are more and we need to get knowledge about them all before investing.

However, proper education is also a concern. Most of the people come from ruler areas. There they are not getting a proper education about this vast digital world. So, they are easy targets for hackers and internet phishers. So, the Nepalese government keeping them away from such a vast market.

Moreover, transitioning towards a more proactive approach, policymakers cite consumer protection as a paramount concern. The volatile nature of cryptocurrencies exposes investors to significant risks, including fraud and financial loss. In a bid to safeguard the interests of its citizens, Nepal has chosen to prohibit their usage altogether.

Further, I want to ask all the readers, are we ready for the new upcoming digital world? If we are ready then, we should think once about cryptocurrency. Besides, its market works just like a share market, and genuine and well-educated investors could make a huge economic contribution to our country.

Furthermore, the ban aligns with the government’s broader agenda of preserving national sovereignty. By curbing the influx of cryptocurrencies, Nepal aims to maintain control over its monetary policies and mitigate potential threats to its economy. Sometimes, such situations may create a liquidity crisis too.

Despite these reasons, some argue for the potential benefits of embracing cryptocurrencies. Advocates highlight their role in fostering financial inclusion, especially in regions with limited access to traditional banking services. However, the Nepalese government remains steadfast in its decision, prioritizing caution over potential gains.

Moreover, crypto mining is still legal. Mining itself is a challenge for Nepalese citizens due to the slow internet. However, a small sum of crypto can be mined through cloud mining. it needs more patience than work. Sometimes, it may take months to generate crypto worth a single dollar. But, it will be all worthless because you cannot do the crypto transaction in Nepal due to the crypto ban.

To sum up, Nepal’s ban on cryptocurrency stems from a combination of regulatory concerns, consumer protection motives, and the desire to uphold national sovereignty. While proponents may champion the advantages of embracing digital currencies, the government’s stance reflects a cautious approach to navigating the evolving financial landscape. As the world continues to grapple with the implications of cryptocurrency, Nepal’s decision serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in its adoption.
