Early Days

The Rana regime introduced the first car in 1935 which was Chevrolet from India. However, the car was not accessible to the general public, and it wasn’t until the early 1950s that cars began to appear on Nepalese roads. Further, high-class families with higher incomes were only able to afford cars. First cars to introduced are mainly British-made models like Morris, Austin, and Hillman

1960s-1970s

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Nepalese government began importing cars from Japan. Nevertheless, government officials and high-class family uses those cars . The introduction of these cars led to a surge in demand for cars among the middle class, but high import taxes made them unaffordable for most people.

1980s-1990s

In the 1980s, Nepal’s automobile industry saw significant growth. The government eased import restrictions, and more cars began to arrive in the country. On the flip side, brands like Toyota, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi became popular among Nepalese consumers. However, the country’s poor road infrastructure meant that four-wheel-drive vehicles were in high demand, and SUVs became increasingly popular.

2000s-Present

The turn of the millennium marked a significant shift in Nepal’s automobile industry. However, with the liberalization of the economy, the government removed import restrictions, and car manufacturers worldwide began to enter the Nepalese market. So, this led to an increase in the variety of cars available to consumers, and the introduction of luxury cars like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

In recent years, the Nepalese government has introduced policies aimed at promoting electric vehicles in the country. The government has reduced electric car taxes and even introduced electric buses in Kathmandu. Furthermore, the adoption of electric cars is still in its early stages, but it is clear that the Nepalese government is committed to promoting sustainable transportation.

Hence the evolution of cars in Nepal has been gradual, with the country’s automobile industry taking shape over several decades. Today, Nepal’s car market is diverse, with cars from all over the world available to consumers.  Cars are now more economical for the public and their popularity is rising day by day.
